What happened to The Walking Dead movies starring Rick Grimes?

Fans of The Walking Dead have longed for the day when Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) would return to the franchise. His departure in season 9 was a major disappointment to many viewers who believe the show suffered greatly with the loss of this character. Several years ago, a trilogy of movies was announced that would see Rick return to the franchise. This was exciting news for fans, but what happened to the plans to create these movies?

The idea of a series of movies highlighting Rick Grimes and the larger world he has encountered since being whisked away in a CRM (Civic Republic Military) helicopter with Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) many years ago was exciting. Fans were eager to learn what became of Rick and what kept him from reuniting with his love Michonne (Danai Gurira), and his children.

In 2022 at Comic-Con, a new announcement was made regarding the continuation of Rick’s story. He and Michonne would be featured in their own spinoff series. This was the highlight of news from Comic-Con, as it was a complete surprise to TWD fans.

What does this mean for the movies?

For many reasons, including changes in executives at AMC, the network decided to scrap the movies and replace them with a series focusing on the apocalyptic powerhouse couple. This series will consist of six episodes and tell the “epic love story” of Rick and Michonne. There has been no news about other characters from the TWDU that will appear, but we have some ideas of characters who should appear in this series. (see article below)

The Rick & Michonne spinoff, Summit, is currently filming in New Jersey and is scheduled for a 2024 release. This series will be an exciting chapter in the story of these two characters who have been absent from The Walking Dead story for quite some time.
