This DC Superhero Was ‘Twilight’ Author Stephenie Meyer’s Favorite To Play Edward Cullen

Pattinson became the perfect vampire to fall for Bella Swan, Twilight author Meyer had other plans for her leading male character.

The romantic vampire fantasy Twilight launched Robert Pattinson into the spotlight, but many may not know that Pattinson wasn’t Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s favorite to play the lead. The 2008 film is part of a saga of Twilight films and is the first in the series. Based on the book written by Meyer’s with the same title, the Twilight franchise went on to be one of the most popular ones in history. Raking in over $2.5 billion at the box office to date, the franchise proved to be incredibly lucrative for the studios, as well the now big-name actors who were catapulted to fame.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Twilight follows the lives of a teenage girl, Bella Swan, and a vampire, Edward Cullen, and the relationship that unfolds between the two as Cullen attempts to save Bella from vampires seeking evil intentions. The English actor Pattinson was cast as Cullen and would remain in the role for all five films. As a result of this role, his career sky-rocketed and he became one of the highest-paid actors in the world. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role, but Pattinson was not Meyer’s top choice. In fact, a DC superhero was…

How Pattinson Was Cast

Pattinson was once a struggling actor fighting to land roles in hopes of securing that big job. After some disappointing attempts at major films, his chance finally arrived. Having his part cut in the 2004 drama Vanity Fair, he was given a shot to audition for Harry Potter because the casting director felt so bad about his first major part being cut without his knowledge. Solidified as a rising actor, he would land the part of Cullen in Twilight. Although talented, he struggled at first to nail down the role of a vampire, but once he figured that out, he became a teen sensation and established movie star. He has since gone on to star in acclaimed films such as The Lighthouse, Tenet, and the new film, The Devil All the Time.

Meyer’s Favorite To Play Cullen

While Pattinson became the perfect vampire to fall for Bella Swan, Twilight author Meyer had other plans for her leading male character. Meyer’s dream casting for Edward Cullen was Henry Cavill, the chiseled actor now famous for his role as DC’s Superman. Meyer thought Cavill was the perfect casting, but his age proved to be a slight problem for the ideal characteristics of the role. Meyer was so enthralled with Cavill that she proposed he be cast as Cullen’s adoptive father, Carlisle. Due to unknown reasons, Cavill was never actually approached for the role and Meyer’s vision was left to Pattinson.

Meyer had other plans for her dream cast that included other famous faces aside from just Pattinson. Kristen Stewart was cast as Bella Swan launching her career into action with films such as Snow White and the Hunstman and Charlie’s Angels. But Meyer had her eyes on another female actress for Swan in Emily Browning. Besides not having the chance to play Bella, the Australian actress has made a great career for herself in the industry starring in films and television series including American Gods and The Affair.

Jacob Black became a significant character in the films due to his close relationship with Bella and fans were eventually pitted against each other as members of Team Edward or Team Jacob. Famously played by Taylor Lautner, Meyer wanted Sky High alum Steven Strait to star in the role. While Strait fell short of the role, Lautner proved to be the perfect casting for Black. As for that other role Meyer saw for Cavill playing, it would eventually go to Peter Facinelli. Facinelli was cast as Carlisle Cullen and Meyer never saw her dream man cast. Unfortunately, Meyer also wanted Charlie Hunnam to play the part of Carlisle but had to accept the choice in Facinelli. Despite her dream casting not coming to fruition, the franchise still proved wildly successful.

Who Is Henry Cavill

The British actor has made a name for himself as Superman, but also as Geralt Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher and Showtime’s The Tudors. But his success hasn’t come without trial and error, and many auditions he attended early on would come up just short. In fact, Cavill would lose out on two huge roles to Pattinson. The first being Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then Edward Cullen in Twilight. Despite fans and Meyer rooting for Cavill, it seemed as though the casting and producing teams had other plans for the directions of both films. Cavill was also considered for the role of James Bond in Casino Royale, but to no avail. It all paid off for Cavill in the end for the DC superhero is now a heartthrob and ambassador and spokesman for The Royal Marines Charity.
