It has been 11 years since the first Twilight movie was marked as the craziest, most addictive screen adaptation in 2008, and this Saga went on until its final movie installment in 2012. Summit Entertainment produced 5 romantic films based on Stephenie Meyer’s four novels. But, of course, everybody already knows this.
To commemorate those 5 consecutive years of insane vampire fantasies and Edward’s smoldering eyes, we dug into how the cast of Twilight had ever survived (or not survived) the challenges that were thrown to them as much as their popularity. They made headlines, received awards, and got a mix of positive and negative reviews, but behind it all, they had tons of interesting experiences during the filming.
Let’s take a look at 20 surprising rules that the amazing cast had to follow to keep their jobs.
20Kiss On Director Catherine Hardwicke’s Bed
Director Catherine Hardwicke asked Robert and Kristen to do their chemistry read by kissing on her bed. Per Buzzfeed she said, “I know you just met, but I need you to do this scene. We’re gonna do it in my bedroom bed and you’re really gonna kiss. Both actors did what they were told but apparently, they got carried away.
19Produce Papers That Prove Native American Heritage
As described in the book, Jacob Black is an attractive Native American of the Quileute tribe in La Push. Per Buzzfeed, the director wanted to make sure that Jacob’s wolf pack was authentic so for the second film, all actors who auditioned for the role were required to show papers that would prove their Native American Heritage.
18Wear Painful Contact Lenses That Limit Vision
Kristen Stewart hated wearing contacts for her role but she had no choice. Per MTV News, the one thing she couldn’t wait to say goodbye to was wearing contacts. She said, “They are worse. The yellow ones sort of limit your vision even more, and so you feel a little bit more closed off.”
17Blindly Accept All Plot Holes
Lead actors have openly expressed how some aspects in the story didn’t make sense. Kristen told Graham Norton, “As soon as she becomes a vampire they kind of ignore their duties. Instantly, they wanna bone. It’s the most ridiculous situation. Really? You just had a child. Really?!”
Robert also bashed the movie plot in an interview with W saying, “It’s nuts. I had to give her a cesarean by chewing through a placenta.”
16Get Naked For The Camera
The one part that Taylor Lautner wouldn’t miss as Jacob Black was getting naked for the camera. He told MTV News, “Taking the shirt off, for sure. It’s not fun.” He further explained that it was because of the weather and that he was the only person with his shirt off. He said, “I wish that everybody could, you know, do it once and then you know, it would make me feel more comfortable.”
15Deal With Being Micromanaged
Robert Pattinson described how his schedule on and off set was micromanaged and how he lost his sense of self. Per Cinemablend, he expressed that what anyone had in mind didn’t matter because “it’s already been written in the book, and the tone has already been set up and the machine is already in motion. It’s frightening when you lose your sense of identity.”
14Change Hair Color…Even If You Risk Going Bald
Before the filming for New Moon started, Nikki Reed expressed that she won’t dye her hair this time. As she dropped by the MTV studio after the discussion of the franchise she said, “My hair fell out. It took 36 hours initially to make me blond, and every other day, I was bleaching my head and skin. This time around, we are testing out different wigs and stuff.”
13Everyone Is Replacable
Heartbreaking news had shocked actress Rachelle Lefevre when she found out that she was being replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard in Eclipse, the third Twilight movie. Per Daily News she said, “I was stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role. I was fully committed to the Twilight saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria.” She also explained that there was a 10-day overlap with her Barney’s Version role and Summit couldn’t accommodate her.
12Stay Outdoors In The Freezing Rain
For someone who only had limited appearances in Twilight, Anna Kendrick felt grateful. She was Bella’s friend but she described the filming experience as miserable. Per Independent, she was glad to only have a few scenes because the rest of the cast barely endured the freezing weather in Oregon and Canada where they filmed. She said, “Imagine if the first four weeks of a new job were spent outdoors in the freezing rain.”
11Wear Uncomfortable Hair Extensions
Kristen was such a beauty in the Twilight saga as well as in the photos but the actress used hair extensions to look perfect and she felt a great discomfort in doing that. In the Ellen Show, a picture of the Twilight Cast was shown and she was asked what that time in her life meant to her. Kristen responded with, “Really uncomfortable hair extensions?”
10Get Used To The Crazed Twihards
Twilight’s fandom was crazy to the extent that there were things that Twihards, as they called themselves, did that made the Twilight cast contemplate why they did what they did. There was even one couple who changed their surnames to Cullen!
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Robert Pattinson said, “I can’t really understand it even now. It does have an angle which is attached to something quite primal in girls.”
9Ditch Your Real Graduation Ceremony For A Fake One
Regardless of any important milestone, there was no way that filming could be interrupted. Twilight always had to be the only priority. Per Digital Spy, Kristen graduated the same day as Bella so Kristen couldn’t attend her high school ceremony. So on set, she took a mock picture with an extra by literally asking the actor to come back, shake her hand, and hand her the diploma while she was dressed in a cap and gown.
8Learn How To Drive
In The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Robert Pattinson was rambling about fire coming off the dashboard of his car and was asked about where he got his license. He said he got it in Oregon after taking some crash course in learning how to drive (which was no doubt, for the filming of Twilight).
7Keep A Safe Distance From Kristen
To further expand on the “carried away” moment, Catherine Hardwicke wasn’t so keen on getting Robert at first, until they did that kiss and the director spotted their electricity. But in the first take, Robert was so wild and was reminded that the movie was PG-13. Robert officially got the role but was asked to keep a safe distance from Kristen who was only 17 at that time. Per Yahoo Entertainment she said, “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested.” She made him swear at the stack of Bibles.
6Learn How To Play Baseball
In an interview with MTV News, Nikki Reed was asked about which moment she thinks will stand out most when she’s 80 years old and reflects on her Twilight experience. She said, “I would have to say the baseball scene. Here’s why: That was the intro to ‘Twilight’ for us. ” She also explained that Catherine Hardwicke had the ability to invest herself very thoroughly in the process so for the baseball scene, they were all in baseball camp for weeks.
5VIP Has Its Downsides
Some people would love to experience the perks of being a movie star but Ashley Greene who played Alice Cullen, didn’t like getting VIP treatments because of its downsides. She told Marie Claire, “Twilight has ruined me. When this is all over, flying internationally is going to be very hard for me. It is just not worth it to buy a first-class ticket, because of the cost.”
4Be Prepared For The Post Twilight Life
Playing the same character for 5 consecutive years on 5 Twilight movies had its downside. After Twilight Saga, Robert struggled in getting more serious roles. He told Vanity Fair, “Having a persona people recognize, it’s the thing that probably gets you paid the most. But it’s also the thing that virtually every actor in the world doesn’t want. ‘Cause like no one would believe me if I wanted to play something ultra-realistic, like a gangster or something.”
3Get Used To Public Scrutiny
In an interview with The New York Times for his Batman role, Robert Pattinson recalled his Twilight days and mentioned how he had gotten used to public scrutiny. He said, “Maybe I’m just used to abuse by now” and further commented that unlike his Twilight days, he “didn’t get death threats” after the casting for Batman was announced in public.
2Just Deal With Sexuality Rumors
The cast had different bad experiences in filming and Kellan Lutz who played Emmett, wasn’t spared from the uncomfortable situations Twilight actors had to deal with. Kellan told Advocate, “I don’t google myself, but I’ve heard that people think I’m gay. I’ve heard it all. See, I don’t really go after girls. Most of the girlfriends I’ve had have come after me.” He also mentioned that Breaking Dawn had a definite gay vibe because of director Bill Condon.
It was no secret that some of the cast of Twilight bashed the movie series because of their uncomfortable and rather, miserable experience in filming. During the promotion of the final Twilight film, Robert Pattinson was asked if there were any mementos he planned on taking from the set to remember his time filming. Per Ranker, he responded saying, “My dignity.”
