How Sons of Anarchy Season 7 Subtly Hinted At Jax Killing Gemma

The second to last episode of Sons of Anarchy has a very subtle hint at Jax killing Gemma, and it's also linked to a behind-the-scenes incident.

Sons of Anarchy has a couple of subtle moments of foreshadowing throughout the whole series, including one that hinted at Jax killing his mother, Gemma, in the final season. In 2008, viewers were taken to California to explore the world of motorcycle clubs in Sons of Anarchy, an action crime drama TV series created by Kurt Sutter. Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and lived on for seven seasons, coming to an end in 2014. Sons of Anarchy was very well-received by the audience and critics from the beginning, with most praise going towards the performances of the main cast and the themes addressed in the series, such as brotherhood, corruption, and racism.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, California. The series kicks off when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John “JT” Teller, one of the founding members of the MC, in which he detailed his plans and vision for the club. These were very different from those of the current President and Jax’s stepfather, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), and along with other problems within the club and his family, they send Jax on a personal journey that leads him to question his path, role in the club, relationships, family, and more.

Jax and the club got involved in a variety of troubles throughout Sons of Anarchy, leading to the deaths of many characters – some as a consequence of their actions, as happened to Clay and even Jax himself, or as collateral damage, as was the case of Opie (Ryan Hurst) and Bobby Munson (Mark Boone Junior). One death that had been brewing for a whole season was that of Gemma (Katey Sagal), and it all began when she killed Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff) at the end of Sons of Anarchy season 6. In order to cover her tracks and avoid retaliation from her son, she lied to him and told him the Chinese were responsible for Tara’s murder, tangling Jax in a web of lies and murders that left him no other choice than to kill himself – but not before he killed Gemma, and her death was subtly teased in that same episode through Jax’s limp.

Gemma’s lies were at the core of all problems Jax and the club went through in Sons of Anarchy season 7, which also led to Bobby’s death, and once Jax learned the truth about who killed Tara, he knew there was no other solution than killing his own mother, and Gemma knew that too. Gemma’s death happened in the second to last episode of Sons of Anarchy, titled “Red Rose”, and in which Jax suddenly started limping. There was no explanation within the series as to why Jax was limping and his right foot was in pain in that episode, but later on, when he kills Gemma, his right shoe is covered with his mother’s blood. This has been seen by Sons of Anarchy fans as a subtle hint of what was to come for Jax and Gemma, but it also had a behind-the-scenes reason to be: Charlie Hunnam broke his foot, so his limping was added to the series, but it was also given a much deeper meaning with that subtle connection to his mother’s blood.

All of Gemma’s lies only made the problem even bigger and instead of protecting the club and her son she ended up doing the complete opposite, as Bobby was killed, the club was in constant danger, and Jax’s actions left him no other choice than to meet Mr. Mayhem – and, of course, they led to her death as well. As for Jax’s sudden limp in the final season of Sons of Anarchy, it’s unclear if Sutter and company intentionally linked Hunnam’s injury to what Jax was going to do later on in the episode or if it was an interesting coincidence, but it’s definitely one of many details that make the series more entertaining.
