Game of Thrones’ Most Loyal Character Is Also Its Most Lovable

There are plenty of characters to loathe in Game of Thrones, but there's one character that is hard to hate thanks to their faithfulness.

In a fictional world full of betrayal and hatred, it’s hard to find characters in Game of Thrones who are deemed as pure as Podrick Payne. Podrick is one of many characters tossed around to serve the needs of others, but his upmost positivity is what makes him the most likable and loyal character in the series.

It’s difficult to think of some negative qualities of Podrick, better known as Pod by some of his closest allies. His charming personality attracts even the worst of people, and his elongated smile is just the cherry on top. And while many characters didn’t get the satisfying character arc that many fans hoped, Pod was able to get his. Starting out as a squire willing to please just about anyone, Pod’s loyalty eventually paid off as he was knighted by Bran at the end of the series, joining the King’s Knightguard. His rewarding ending was made possible thanks to some of his best moments in the series.

Podrick’s eagerness to help others is clearly noted when he is first named as a squire for Tyrion Lannister. Even though he performed duties not normal to a squire, such as pouring drinks and running errands instead of combat-related duties, he was never seen as unhappy with his job. His relationship with Tyrion made both himself and Tyrion better people as they both appreciated each other’s company. Podrick saved Tyrion’s life twice, first in the Battle of Blackwater by killing Ser Mandon who sliced open Tyrion’s face. After Joffrey’s assassination, Podrick is approached by a Gold Cloak who offers him knighthood if he testifies against Tyrion, who was suspected of the crime. Podrick refuses, which also made him a suspect, and Tyrion expresses his gratefulness, calling Podrick one of the most loyal squires anyone could hope for.

Later on, Podrick becomes a squire to Brienne of Tarth, who isn’t exactly thrilled to have him catering to her. Even though she constantly berates him on not being able to skin a rabbit or ride a horse like a normal squire would, he never lets the critiques get him down. Instead he always shows a willfulness to improve himself and stick by Brienne’s side on her quest to find and protect the Stark sisters. Podrick’s most outstanding moment during his time with Brienne may just be after Sansa and Arya are reunited, and he ensures Brienne that Catelyn Stark would be proud of her for keeping her promise.

Podrick has also displayed his hidden talent of singing on many occasions, and there’s even a theory that suggests the reason the ladies at the brothel refused his payment was because he sang for them. But the only time he ever sang on screen was the night before the Battle of Winterfell after Brienne is knighted by Jaime Lannister. During one of the darkest times of these characters’ lives, Podrick was able to bring in some light by performing “Jenny of Oldstones.”

Not only was Podrick the most loyal character in Game of Thrones, but he was also one of the most courageous. His bravery during the Battle of Blackwater, the fight against the Bolton men and the army of the dead shows that even his lack of experience couldn’t stop him from doing what’s right. He may be a knight by the finale, but his time as the most loyal squire there ever was will never be forgotten.
