A Timeline Of Dakota Johnson And Chris Martin’s Relationship

Hollywood has its fair share of low-key romances, and the relationship between actress Dakota Johnson and Coldplay lead singer, Chris Martin is one of them. Since 2017, the pair has been dating, but neither has come forward to make it clear to the public. This happens to be Martin’s first serious relationship after his divorce and conscious uncoupling from actress Gwyneth Paltrow, now-famed for her Goop brand.

32-year-old Dakota Johnson, on the other hand, previously dated her childhood sweetheart, Noah Gersh. The Fifty Shades of Grey actress was also linked to actor Jordan Masterson and musician Matthew Hitt, with whom she was in a relationship before Chris Martin came around. More times than we can count, Martin and Johnson have been spotted together and served couple goals. Here’s a timeline of their relationship so far:

10 October 2017: Rumors Begin After A Sushi Date

Rumors of a Dakota Johnson-Chris Martin relationship surfaced in October 2017 when the pair was spotted on a sushi dinner date. According to People, the pair choose a random Tuesday night to grab some sushi and they were ‘cozy and affectionate’ with each other according to a witness’s account. Dakota and Chris beat the paparazzi at their own game since no pictures from that night ever surfaced.

9 November 2017: Johnson Is Spotted At A Coldplay Concert

After rumors of Johnson and Martin’s relationship began, it didn’t take long before another public appearance was made, adding even more fuel to the fire. The Head Full of Dreams Tour by Coldplay began in March of 2016 and ran through to November of 2017, the band’s last stop being in Argentina. During the tour’s finale, Johnson was spotted at a sound booth.

8 November 2017: The Couple Attends A Nick Cave Concert

It was pretty clear by November that something was brewing between Johnson and Martin. Turns out a Coldplay concert wasn’t the only one Johnson would be attending. The pair flew all the way to Israel to attend a Nick Cave concert. Prior to Cave’s performance, the Coldplay lead singer was seen in the company of Cave at a restaurant named Yam Sheva, with Johnson by his side.

7 December 2017: The Relationship Is Confirmed

In December of 2017, Us Weekly confirmed that Johnson and Martin were indeed an item. The publication received a tip from an anonymous source, who said, “They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable with one another. Chris sends Dakota his music to get her opinion.” The source further revealed that things were getting serious, and it was more than just a fling.

6 January 2018: Don Johnson Gives His Two Cents

At the National Television Awards, Dakota Johnson’s dad, Don Johnson was the first to give his two cents on the unlikely pairing. Asked about the budding romance, Johnson first made a joke of it. “ Yeah, that’s…uh troubling, isn’t it? “ The Miami Vice actor said, before crowning it all with trust in his daughter. “No, she’s a big girl, she can handle herself.”

5 May 2018: Melanie Griffith Gives Her Stamp Of Approval

While Don Johnson may think of the relationship as troubling, Dakota Johnson’s mom, Melanie Griffith seems to have a different view when it comes to her daughter’s relationship with the ‘Fix You’ singer. At the Global Gift Foundation Women Empowerment Luncheon, when asked about her daughter’s relationship, Griffith said she loved that she was private about her life. 4 August 2019: The Couple Makes An Appearance At ‘The Peanut Butter’ Premiere

More than a year after Griffith gave Martin her stamp of approval, a lot was thought to have happened between the two. Besides rumors of an engagement flying around, Johnson also confirmed during an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she was not pregnant. The pair also had to deal with rumors that surfaced about Chris Martin getting cozy with another celebrity. Things seemed to be okay when they were once again seen in public at the premiere of The Peanut Butter.

3 March 2020: The Hand Washing Challenge

We’d like to think that this is the point where Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin became Instagram official, but it’s neither here nor there. Johnson jumped on a handwashing challenge at the beginning of the pandemic, using her friend Olivia Wilde’s account. In the clip, she’s seen washing ‘her’ hands, but in reality, Chris Martin is the one doing the washing.

2 January 2021: The Pair Acquires A Malibu Mansion

By the end of 2020, the relationship between Dakota and Chris had reached its ultimate high. The Fifty Shades Freed actress directed a Coldplay video, making it the first official work between the two. In December, Dakota was spotted with an emerald engagement ring, but nothing was confirmed. In January of 2021, it was reported that the pair was moving in together, and had settled on a Malibu mansion which was acquired for millions.

1 October 2021: Martin Refers To Johnson As ‘My Universe’

In May of 2021, once again, Johnson and Martin were seen together, this time at a getaway in Spain. Soon afterward, for the first time in public, the singer declared his love for Johnson, calling her his ‘universe’ by dedicating a performance in London to her. “This is about my universe. And she’s here!” Martin said while pointing towards Johnson. A month later, Johnson would go on about how things were great with her partner.
