In 2020, her husband Justin Bieber revealed that he previously relied on ɗrʋġs as an ‘escape’ from his life in the spotlight.
And on on Wednesday, Hailey Bieber revealed that helping Justin navigate his sobriety was ‘extremely difficult’ for her, as it brought back memories of watching her father Stephen Baldwin struggle with his addicti0ns.
The 24-year-old model spoke candidly on the Victoria’s Secret Voices podcast about it, adding that ‘there’s a lot of addicti0n that runs in my family.’
Adding: ‘Not even just my dad, but a lot of other people on that side of my family struggle with a lot of different things.’
Hailey explained: ‘My dad was always really open about [his addicti0n] and I always appreciated that.’
‘I was always really, really close to my dad… he was just always, like, extremely open about why being sober was what worked for him and why we needed to be sober and what alcoholic behavior looks like, and where that comes out.’
Hailey continued on the podcast: ‘Looking back on times of ɗrʋġ use and being in some dark spaces and having to kind of go back there was extremely difficult.’
Being like, “Hey, where are you at with this?” I’ve had times where I would get nervous, [asking Justin], “Are you OK to do this? Because you did have a time in your life where it was not OK for you and it as dark time for you,’ she reflected.
‘But he has very good self-awareness when it comes to that and is very open about it and that’s all I can really ask for.
Her dad Stephen, 55, overcame ɗrʋġ abuse after becoming a born-again Evangelical following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Her uncle Daniel Baldwin, 61, also battled an almost 20-year ɗrʋġ addicti0n that began in 1989; after nine rehab visits over the years the actor has gotten sober.
Last year, Justin revealed he relied on ɗrʋġs as an ‘escape’ from his life in the spotlight.
The singer has admitted that he first tried marijuana when he was just 13, after rocketing to fame as a child when he was discovered on YouTube.
After becoming dependent on weed, Justin began to drink lean – a narcotic substance often called purple drank or sizzurp – as well as taking pills, doing Molly, and trying mushrooms.
Speaking about hisaddicti0ns in an episode of his YouTube Premium documentary ‘Justin Bieber: Seasons’, he said: ‘It was just an escape for me. I was young.’
Adding: ‘My experience was in front of cameras and I had a different level of exposure.’
The Yummy hitmaker made headlines as a teenager for getting into trouble with the law, and says he ‘valued the wrong things’ in life because they were being ‘dangled’ in front of him.
He added: ‘I started valuing the wrong things in this business because there were things dangling in front of me. The truth is, I never had the tools. My parents never gave me those tools to be a good team player.’
Justin eventually decided to get sober because he was ‘dying’, and said people aren’t aware of how ‘serious’ his addicti0ns were.
He explained: ‘I was, like, d-y-i-ng. People don’t know how serious it got It was legit, crazy scary.
‘I basically said to myself, ‘God, if you are real, you get me through this season of stopping these pills and stuff, and if you do, I’ll do the rest of the work.’ I never did the actual work. I got off the pills but never went to the root of everything so I just circled back around which most people do.’
